Continue the Momentum of Health
IT!
Since the inaugural National Health IT
Week in June 2006, there have been several significant developments
in health IT:
- Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt accepted 30
harmonized healthcare IT standards from the Healthcare Information
Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and version 1.2 of the HITSP
Interoperability Specifications
- The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information
Technology ( CCHIT) became the first group to be designated as a
Recognized Certification Body by the Department of Health and Human
Services
- The American Health Information Community ( AHIC) formed a
Quality Workgroup to address the need for the development of
quality measures
- The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices
created the State Alliance for e-Health, which enables governors,
elected officials and other policymakers to work together in
seeking interstate- and intrastate-based health IT policies and
practices
- T en governors signed Executive Orders encouraging state
initiatives, and the majority of states (33) have an identifiable
level of health IT planning
- Congress renewed its focus on personal health records, quality
measurement and establishing independent e-health record banks
- The Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute were relaxed to allow
hospitals and health systems to subsidize the purchase of
electronic health records and other health IT solutions
- Large corporations are entering the market in new ways and
bringing a consumer focus to the health IT industry
National Health IT Week will build on these developments and
further the discussion and actions needed to achieve national
healthcare transformation for the purpose of improved patient
safety and cost efficiency.
